Explore Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site

Enjoy touring this mid-1800s era trading post! It was built near the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers by the American Fur Trading Company in 1828 for the purpose of peaceful trade with the Assiniboine, Cree, Crow, Blackfeet, Ojibwa, Hidatsa, Mandan, Arikara and Sioux tribes. Don't forget to snap a selfie at the state line marker between the parking areas!

Picnic Lunch & Trail Walk @ MYCIC

The Missouri Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center offers the same magnificent views the Lewis & Clark Expedition saw over 100 years ago at the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers. Enjoy regional history displays, surrounding trails, picnic areas and gift shop.

Tour Fort Buford State Historic Site

Fort Buford was a military installation best known as the place where the Hunkpapa Sioux leader Sitting Bull turned over his rifle in 1881. It was built to protect land and river routes traveled by settlers moving west. Tour the original site to see a stone powder magazine and officers' quarters which now house a museum. Visit the cemetery! Each marker notes how its owner perished.

The Grand Treasure Casino and Painted Pony Restaurant is located just west of Trenton, North Dakota. Try your luck at the slots! Then order a burger off their casual menu or grill your steak over the fire just how you like it at their indoor steak pit.

Alternate I - History of the Fur Trade!

Enjoy delving into local history at the beautiful Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Center. Fort Buford State Historic Site is nearby & Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site, with its reconstructed Bourgeois House, is only another couple miles west! (3 hours) 

Stop for supper and casino gambling in Trenton or drive over to Fairview for local favorite Powder Keg Pizza. (2 hours) 

Still have more gas in the tank? Take in sunset from the middle of the Fairview Lift Bridge. (1 hour)
